What’s in Ze Bag? (April)

roddy News Read on

Yes, it’s May. If this looks familiar it’s because subscribers should already have everything here!

And there’s a little something extra for a random group of subscribers… We shipped out 20 ipod shuffles to a mostly random selection of subscribers who’ve been with SS since the beginning and had been blogging/tweeting about SS. We’re going to keep that party going as new and interesting random schwag comes in. More surprises next month.

Speaking of which, we’re shipping a little later this month (still around the 15th). We’d planned to ship DataPortability this month (the logo design winner announced on TechCrunch). It was amazing to see how quickly stickers with that logo became available at Web2.0Expo. Turnaround was same day. And then the new logo, created b/c the last one infringed, also infringed. So we have a surprise shirt this month =)

Vote for the new DataPortability logo and influence next month’s shirt

Lisa News Read on

DataPortability encompasses the suite of technologies that make your Internet more open, social, and all kinds of mashed up, and due to some prickly legal issues with Red Hat that nobody really cared to deal with they’ve having a contest to find a new logo.  After talking with co-founder Chris Saad and agreeing that evangelism is one of the most critical components to adopting new ideas, we’ve worked out a deal to welcome the new logo on the chests of all the beautiful Startup Schwag subscribers next month.  So if you’re not already familiar with the project, check out this video and get ready to help represent one of the most important initiatives associated with Web 2.0.  But voting for the logos is only open until 11:59 PST tonight, so hurry!

Shipped (Finally.)

Aaaand they’re off. Little delay waiting for some more stickers to arrive. Shirts look great (we’re going to stick with some more subtle colors for a bit). There are a handful of interesting extras this month. And some surprises.

Somebody wants Disqus shirts. Look at this:

As Disco Stu says, “if this trend continues… heeeyyy.” They may just be the first shirt that we first saw as a sticker. In November’s bag. Just before they got all that traffic. Coincidence?

We’ve had some requests for twitter shirts. Those look like this:

I think they’re brilliant shirts. I wish the twitter guys would let us print some shirts for them. If you know someone there maybe you could introduce me.

Come say “Hi” at Web2.0Expo. I’m in SF most of next week for the festivities.

So, I’ve been holding off on this b/c I’ve been waiting for some content that still hasn’t arrived. It’s going to be worth it. In the meantime, we’re shipping later this week. Starting this month there’s a little more cowbell.

Are you tagging your photos?

Just a quick reminder that Flickr photos tagged with startupschwag automatically appear in our sidebar, and I’ll link clever pictures either here in the blog or on our twitter account.

Take Andy here, for example, harnessing the power of Ustream to fight the good Dalek fight at the Dr. Who exhibit in Cardiff, Wales.  Ex-ter-mi-nate, indeed!

PS:  Bonus points for uploading your photos with a Creative Commons license, which makes it a lot easier for people on the Internet to do cool things with your content (but you still get credit).  Learn the benefits and how to change your Flickr license settings here.

SXSWi2008: Schwag as far as the eye can see

Lisa News Read on

So now almost a full week after the close of SXSW, the stacks of business cards have been meticulously filed and everyone has just about recovered from the annual worldwide virus swap of SxSARS, and I’ve finally got the time again to sit down and sort through the piles of new goodies that ended up coming home with me in my suitcase.

I was impressed with the logistics involved in assembling as much official schwag as this conference doled out, but overall wasn’t so impressed with the content.  It took approximately 1700 volunteers four hours to assemble the 26,000 bags, each consisting of ten pounds or so of magazines and flyers, with only a couple of items that didn’t go straight to the trash.  Notable giveaways included an Opera koozie, fortune cookies from Adobe, and coupons to try free bottles of Fuze.  My twitter buddy Allen from CenterNetworks made a painstakingly inclusive video of the bag contents if you’re into that sort of thing.

Fortunately, the real schwag was to be found by mingling with the panelists and attendees.  Even though I inconveniently made it to the trade show portion 30 minutes after final closing time (it took me 4 days to find it…srsly, this is a big place), I was still able to schwag with Pownce, Fire Eagle, Pixish, Seesmic, Microsoft Silverlight, Dipity, Microformats, and finally got a coveted baby blue "fresh" shirt from schwag trailblazers and my long-time role models at Ruby Red Labs (the masterminds also behind Get Satisfaction) while cruising in the RVIP Lounge.  It isn’t time yet to reveal my full list of minglees, but don’t be surprised if you see some of these names delivered to your door in the upcoming months.  ^_^

Speaking of, if you just can’t wait and want advance notice on the schwag deals we’re got in the works, be sure to follow @startupschwag on twitter.  It’ll also earn you more karma than eating all your vegetables and helping old ladies across the street.

Startup Schwag
